How might counselling help you?
Why do people
seek counselling?
People
usually seek counselling when their usual ways of coping with a
situation are failing. They might be struggling with feelings
of anxiety, fear, anger, confusion or hopelessness, or they might
find themselves in a difficult dilemma. They might also be
experiencing difficulties in their relationships. It can take
people some time to make the decision to seek support.
How does
counselling work?
Counselling
can work on many different levels. It can be helpful to talk
through your situation and express your feelings to a
non-judgemental, objective listener. It can help to explore
your difficulties with someone who will notice patterns or links.
It can also be helpful to look at the relationship that develops
between you and your counsellor, as this is likely to mirror the
relationships you form with others.
Working with a counsellor can be very rewarding as you discover hidden
strengths and truths about yourself. It is also often a time
of change and reorientation. The process requires commitment as it
can be uncomfortable at times as you re-experience difficult
situations or re-discover difficult thoughts or feelings.
How do I work?
I work from an
integrative perspective, and am influenced by person-centred,
existential and psychodynamic thinking. The person-centred
approach highlights the self-healing capacity within us all, and the
importance of the therapeutic relationship. An existential
approach is concerned with searching for ways to live a more
meaningful life within the constraints of being human. For brief explanations
